Cool Fish Sightings in Hawaii
October, 2004. New Species of Goatfish Reported in Hawaii!
The specimen below is Mulloidichthys mimicus, a species that occurs in the Seychelles, Marquesas, and Line Islands, where it mimics and schools with taape (bluestriped snapper). It was caught recently on Kauai and photographed by fisherman Alden Takata.
Below is a picture of a school of Mulloidichthys mimicus (NOT from Hawaii). There is one taape in the school of mimic wekes...can you find it? Photo by Jack Randall, courtesy of FishBase.
The Bishop Museum has requested that we keep an eye out for this species, so if you ever encounter it, try to get photos! Make sure you document where it was seen, and contact your local Hawaii Department of Aquatic Resources office. You should also contact Arnold Suzumoto, Ichthyology Collections Manager at the Bishop Museum.
